The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) along with The HongKong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited, Standard Chartered Bank (HK) Limited, and the Bank of China (HK) Limited issued a notification that the 2018 Series HK$100 banknote is available for the public from 3 September 2019.
Some of the unique design features include innovative watercolor painting technique, a first in HK banknote. An extra sense of dynamism is introduced in the 2018 series, where ‘Stitt’ the lion is at a different angle on each denomination. It appears to be transferring his gaze from one side to the other through the denominations
- There are seven sophisticated security features in the 2018 series. An iridescent pattern on the mane of ‘Stitt’ shimmers when titled.
- All notes have a micro text hexagon and letters “HSBC” in large numerals at the top left corner. Raised printing gives the note an embossed feeling when touched.
- Large numerals of each denomination appear as a concealed denomination when the note is tilted.
- Rotating circles in the windowed metallic thread are visible as part of the enhanced security in the center of each note when titled.
- Two visual effects- a dynamic shimmering pattern- appear around the numeral on the top right corner when titled.
- The bauhinia flower, leaves, buds, and denomination numeral can be seen in the enhanced watermark on the right side of the note as viewed from the front when it is held up to the light.
- A fluorescent see-through pattern on the front and back of the notes fits to form a number when the note is held up to the light. Only part of the pattern appears on each face of the note when viewed from that side before being held up.
The remaining two denominations HK$ 50 and HK$ 20 will be issued into circulation in early 2020.
