The Central Bank of Romania will launch a new RON 20 in the year 2020 that will carry the portrait of Ecaterina Teodoroiu, a heroine of Romania. She fought and died in the Second World War (WWI).
The Central Bank says that Ecaterina’s image on the note has a dual significance. It denotes BNR’s support for the rising gender equality and, also, marks the centenary of Great Romania. The exact date of the launch and other details will be announced later.
Ecaterina Teodoroiu was born in the year 1894 at the village of Vadeni. She wanted to pursue the teaching profession, but she started working as a nurse when the kingdom of Romania entered World War I. She replaced her brother Nicolae, who died on the frontline, as a soldier. It was a rare decision in those days. She proved her valor and died as a soldier fighting the battle in Marasesti. Ecaterina was killed in machine gunfire.
