The Hong Kong Monetary Authority is set to launch the new HK$ 20, and HK$50 banknotes on January 14, 2020. Customers can exchange old notes for new on the very same day.
The notes are released by the city’s note-issuing banks - HSBC, Standard Chartered Bank, and Bank of China. The HK$20 is themed around yum cha or tea gatherings, a favorite among Hongkongers, and the HK$50 will feature butterflies. The bank chose to launch the new notes together so that the public could exchange the notes for lai see money.
Lai see money is handed out to children and unmarried people as part of the Lunar New Year Holiday.
